Find the perfect local trail, identify birds and wildflowers, know your altitude and even get to know the names of the peaks around you using these fun (and mostly free) apps.

Boulder Area Trails App

Apps for Boulder Denver

Discover all the local trails, get real-time information on trail closures, and even allows you to filter your search to find trails that fit your needs (paved trails, dog-friendly trails, etc) with the Boulder Area Trails App. Provides a single source for all designated public recreation trails and trailheads in and around Boulder and Broomfield counties. Includes 295 trailheads and 1,440 miles of trail. The app is designed to enable users to find trails by use or type, plan routes by connecting local community trails, and link to the appropriate agency websites for more information. The application was a collaboration of 12 agencies, including Boulder County, City and County of Broomfield, City of Boulder, City of Longmont, City of Lafayette, City of Louisville, Rocky Mountain National Park, Town of Superior, Town of Erie, Town of Lyons, Town of Nederland, and the United States Forest Service. This app is FREE.

Merlin Bird ID

Apps for Boulder Denver

I can’t be the only one who gets excited to see a new bird. Colorado is home to so many unique and beautiful birds, it’s fun to look for them and learn more about them. The Merlin Bird ID app is pretty cool, it helps you narrow down the bird you spotted by asking for your location, the time of year, the color, and the size. This app is FREE.

Colorado Wildflowers Guide

Apps for Boulder Denver Colorado

Much like the bird ID, the Colorado Wildflowers app allows you to use the color, size, time of year, and location to identify wildflowers. The app can also use your camera, or a previously taken photo to ID that pretty flower you see on the side of the trail. This app is FREE.

My Altitude App

The My Altitude app gives you your current altitude as well as your coordinates, details on barometric pressure, as well as weather and air quality. This app is FREE.

Trip Bucket

The Trip Bucket App allows you to check out fun things to do nearby, and save lists of things you want to do (in Colorado and beyond!). This app is FREE.

PeakFinder App

If you like to nerd out on mountains, check out the PeakFinder app.  Simply allow the app to use your GPS location, then point your phone at the peak you are trying to ID. This app is $4.99, which I thought was a small price to pay for such a fun tool.

COTREX Colorado Trails App
