The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Cultural Diversity Celebration at the newly renovated Howard Heuston Park. The department is partnering with The Family Learning Center to host a celebration in the park with activities including music performances from local artists, fitness demonstrations and soccer clinics. There will be multicultural entertainment, youth sports strength and conditioning camp, dancers, local bands, turkey hot dogs, fruit, water and other healthy snacks. Presented by special guest, Dr. Becky Thompson. In addition, to being a physicist, cyclist, Dr. Thompson leads Educational Outreach for the American Physical Society. She’s responsible for finding interesting and creative ways of teaching Physics to young students nationwide. She writes STEAM concept comic books geared for middle and high school students and develops STEM curriculum adventures and educational tool kits that are available at no cost to science teachers nationwide. Please join us for this very special entertaining educational show! The 8th Annual Happy Smackah 5k Fun Run / Walk is here! This is an untimed event to support Clara Ship who is fighting “congenital myopathy” a type of muscular dystrophy including neuropathy. Clara is the 2018 Happy Smackah 5k Fun Run / Walk beneficiary — all proceeds of this 5k go to Clara and her family for their management of her rare disease.

Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day, was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, author Pat Mora linked the celebration of children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros. The Celebration culminates at the end of April! Around the country, a special celebration of linking children to books, home languages and cultures is held at schools, libraries, museums, churches, parks, and bookstores. Broomfield will be celebrating Dia de Los Ninos by holding multi-lingual storytimes all day, as well as dance and music from around the world and a ton of fun learning opportunities! The Fiesta Colorado Dance Company will be closing the day with its Fiesta Spring Concert at the Auditorium at 6:30PM. Food trucks will be on-hand.

Ages: 18 months – 12 years

Tinker Time at Tinker Art Studio is an opportunity for children to engage in art exploration. The studio offers several stations set up with a variety of materials as well as ideas and techniques for use of materials are offered. Children have complete creative control and enjoy moving freely between stations. Paints, oil pastels, clay, print making, wire and wood sculpture, stamping, cut paper collage… are some of the mediums found during Tinker Time. Parents can drop off their artist off anytime during Tinker Time to run a few errands, take a break at the coffee shop, or stay at Tinker watching their artist at work. All ages are welcome, but if your child is under 4, we ask that a parent or caregiver remain with them in the studio. Tinker Time is limited to 16 students, so if you want to be guaranteed a spot, it’s highly encouraged that you reserve a space in advance.

Centennial State Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty

Centennial State Ballet will perform The Sleeping Beauty, a ballet in a prologue and three acts, for their Spring gala production. The well-known fairy tale​is the story of a baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday. She is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The two main conflicting forces of good and evil serve as a theme throughout this fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince and magical stage effects. Audiences of all ages will be entranced as the beloved story comes to life onstage through the artistry of the Centennial State Ballet performers. Choreography by Kristin Kingsley, inspired by Marius Petipa. Musical accompaniment features the Centennial State Ballet Chamber Orchestra. **Special Ballet Petit performance is perfect for younger audiences. Enjoy a narrated version of The Sleeping Beauty performance in a theater setting. In the lower level, kids will love the interactive play and learning area. Right outside the play area parents can enjoy a nice, FREE cup of coffee or tea in the museum’s BioLounge with comfortable seats and inviting atmosphere. Known as one of the most unique and quirky festivals in America, Frozen Dead Guy Days takes place in the mountain town of Nederland, just thirty minutes from Boulder. The festival, celebrating its 17th year, features three days of frosty merriment including 30 live bands in heated super tents and outrageous events like coffin racing, costumed polar plunging, the Blue Ball, frozen t-shirt contests and much more. The home-grown frosty fest pays homage to Bredo Morstol, who is frozen in a state of suspended animation and housed in a Tuff Shed on dry ice high above Nederland. This season’s production of Stepping Out will again feature the “highly successful collaboration of original experimental music, stimulating choreography, and company dancer input and improvisation” (Jane Werle, Presenting Denver) that was the hallmark of the 2017 show. Michael Schulze, Teaching Associate Professor, Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, is returning in 2018 to compose a new piece of electronic music and collaborate with Amy Earnest and dancer/Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin as choreographers.
