It will all culminate on Memorial Day weekend with the Boulder Creek Festival and of course, the BolderBOULDER. Dash & Dine 5k Run Series

The Dash & Dine Run 5k run is Boulder’s favorite spring tune-up race series. This family friendly race is a series of six races Tuesday nights in April and May held at the beautiful Boulder Reservoir in Boulder, CO. The Dash & Dine 5k is all about friends, fun, and a family atmosphere with a mix of veterans, beginners, and seasoned professionals all racing together. After each race you’ll have a chance to relax, kick back with friends and make a few more while enjoying the post-race dinner, awards ceremony, and raffle prizes.

September School presents Women Rock Boulder at the Boulder Theater – a benefit concert for the scholarship fund. September School, now in its 44th year, is Boulder’s oldest independent high school. A relationship-based learning community, September School prides itself on being a place where students are seen and heard. Women Rock Boulder is a benefit concert for our Scholarship Fund. Featuring artists Tracksuit Wedding, Erica Brown, and Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene, this show will be a rock and roll party in celebration of September School.

With a drop from a giant bucket, thousands of little yellow rubber ducks are ceremoniously dropped into Fall River at Nicky’s Resort for the 30th Annual Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival. Adopt a $20 duck for the chance to win one of the hundreds of prizes offered, including a trip to Costa Rica or Mexico/Riviera Maya. Proceeds from the event go to over 60 different Estes Valley charities. These charities will receive 95% of the money collected from adoptions. It’s a fun family outing with lots of music and entertainment as well. Race festivities get underway at Nicky’s Resort at 11AM on race day. Ducks go into the water at 1PM and activities continue in Riverside Plaza until the last duck swims past the finish line. Celebrated American rural folk pianist George Winston has just released his 14th solo piano album, Spring Carousel. Previous inductees for running include: Frank Shorter, Lorraine Moller, Benji Durden, and Arturo Barrios. The Hall of Fame was established in 2011 by a group of local athletes to honor and preserve the legacy of some of the all-time greats who lived and trained in Boulder on their way to becoming the best in the world in their respective events. At the age of 84, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. The Boulder Ballet will be performing one of the oldest continuously performed ballets, Giselle at the Dairy Arts Center. Giselle is about a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle’s great love frees him from their grasp. For over thirty years, the Boulder Creek Festival® has been the unofficial kickoff to summer in Boulder. Help One Tree Planted plant 7,000 trees this Earth Day weekend! The Fourmile Fire in 2010 burned 160 homes and left whole mountainsides scorched and without vegetation. Mountainous areas that experience wildfire are prone to flooding and landslides in the subsequent years, and that is exactly what has happened in Fourmile Canyon. Planting trees and revegetating helps stabilize the soils on steep slopes, improves habitat, and contributes to improved water quality in the rivers. At this tree planting event, please bring gardening gloves and a shovel if you can, if not there will be gloves and shovels on site but it helps if you can bring your own. Also recommended: a bottle of water, a hat and/or sunscreen, comfortable shoes, good vibes, AND a tote bag to carry the saplings. For more info, click here.

Ocean First has sponsored a section of the diagonal highway for several years, and it’s time for the Earth Day Highway Cleanup. If you are looking to help make a difference on Earth Day, meet with other volunteers at Ocean First with your work boots on! After a short safety briefing, volunteers will grab trash bags and carpool to our sponsored section of the diagonal highway near Niwot, where the trash awaits our enthusiastic cleaning crew. By the afternoon we will return to Ocean First for lunch, prizes, and congratulatory pats on the back. Keep your eyes out for some interesting pieces of trash – best find gets a prize! It’s not rare to find a few dollar bills laying around the side of the road.

The Conference on World Affairs, famously called “the Conference on Everything Conceivable” by Roger Ebert, is held every April at the University of Colorado Boulder campus. The public is invited to witness any of the 200 sessions held by 100 speakers and performers. These thought leaders will be discussing and debating a variety of topics from gender issues, science and technology, environmental and political topics, pop culture and so much more! #1 Danielle Feinberg Lights Up Coco!

Danielle Feinberg, Director of Photography (Lighting) for Pixar Animation Studios, will be speaking about how she, and her co-creators, create stories with soul and wonder using math, science and code to create the jaw-dropping worlds of Coco, Brave, Finding Nemo and more. Danielle works with teenage girls to ignite a passion for science and technology and to encourage these young women to pursue a career in Computer Science. She is also a Boulder native. A panel of experts will be discussing how the Earth has been affected by humans by asking the question: Have humans caused a new global epoch? Speakers include David Grinspoon of Planetary Science Institute, Tracey Holloway Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison and President of Earth Science Women’s Network, Jennifer Thomsen Assistant Professor of Parks, Tourism, and Recreation Management for the University of Montana, and Alexander Verbeek, Dutch Diplomat, Environmentalist and Associate at Stockholm Environment Institute.

#3 Resonance Borealis

Pianist Roman Zavada performs live on stage under imagery and video of the Aurora Borealis in Northern Canada at Fiske Planetarium. From the rock of the Canadian Shield to sitting on the edge of the taiga, Roman Zavada pushed his creative boundaries by getting inspiration from one of the most majestic and grand phenomena on our planet — the northern lights. A colorful immersive show in which Roman Zavada performs live features the piano, resonating strings, and auroras filmed in real time and 360 degrees. A talk will be given by CU Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences researcher, Robert Ergun, on heliospheric and astrophysical plasmas.

Resonance Borealis will be held at Fiske Planetarium for two performances on Thursday, at 11AM – 12:15PM and 4:30PM – 5:45PM.

#4 Poetry: The Power of the Words of Women

Amanda Gorman, the first ever Youth Poet Laureate of the United States of America, has been called the “next great figure of poetry in the US”. She will be speaking at the Conference on World Affairs this year, at Poetry: The Power of the Words of Women. Amanda Gorman is an award-winning published writer, an ambassador for the feminist platform, School of Doodle, as well as a sophomore at Harvard University.

One of CWA’s major events, keynote speaker Tony Seba will present Rethinking the Future: Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation. Tony Seba is the co-founder of RethinkX, a think tank that forecasts the speed as well as the scale of technology-driven disruption. He is also an author and educator at Stanford University.

#8 My Journey as a Lost Boy

Valentino Achak Deng, a Minister of Education for South Sudan, tells his story as a lost boy. The Lost Boys of Sudan were over 40,000 boys of the Nuer and Dinka ethnic groups who were displaced or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1987–2005); about 2 million were killed and millions were displaced. In 2006, Valentino Achak Deng and author, Dave Eggers established the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation to help rebuild Sudanese communities by increasing access to educational opportunities. The foundation’s focus is on quality education, vocational training, sustainable development and girls’ education. Despite Deng’s hardships, he maintains an unwavering, positive outlook on South Sudan and believes the solution lies in increased education and knowledge of human rights and improved economic opportunities.

#9 Ebert Uninterruptus / Interruptus: Mad Max Fury Road

The Ebert Interruptus series is one of the most beloved and popular Conference on World Affairs traditions: a four-part event showcasing a film along with in-depth analysis over 3 sessions. The host of this year’s Ebert Interruptus will be film critic Josh Larsen, who will break down and discuss Mad Max: Fury Road. The film is a post-apocalyptic action adventure (the first action film for Ebert Interruptus). To be clear, the first showing will simply be a showing of the film itself, while the following three events will be a viewing of the film, interrupted shot-by-shot for discussion and analysis.

A corresponding discussion will take place from 2:30 – 5PM. Audiences of all ages will be entranced as the beloved story comes to life onstage through the artistry of the Centennial State Ballet performers. Known as one of the most unique and quirky festivals in America, Frozen Dead Guy Days takes place in the mountain town of Nederland, just thirty minutes from Boulder. The festival, celebrating its 17th year, features three days of frosty merriment including 30 live bands in heated super tents and outrageous events like coffin racing, costumed polar plunging, the Blue Ball, frozen t-shirt contests and much more. The home-grown frosty fest pays homage to Bredo Morstol, who is frozen in a state of suspended animation and housed in a Tuff Shed on dry ice high above Nederland. Thousands of adventurous, life enthusiasts come to participate in Colorado’s “most frigidly fun festival” and view the events along with local, national and international media and entertainment.
