This was a hard list to pare down – Boulder’s restaurant scene is diverse and extensive! These 5 restaurants stand out as both kid-friendly and enjoyable for adults.
The Southern Sun
The Southern Sun Restaurant and Brewery has got to be the most family-friendly restaurant EVER. Seating is perfect to meet up with family or friends, with long picnic-like tables as well as booths so that everyone can gather ‘round. The atmosphere is down-to-earth with a super-friendly staff that is helpful and quick! Kids can choose from a variety of options that will please the pickiest of eaters. For the adults, the options range from vegetarian-friendly dishes to burgers and chili. Delicious comfort food paired perfectly with a long list of Colorado craft brews. To top it all off, the Table Mesa location is perfect after a hike at Chautauqua or NCAR, with breathtaking views of the flatirons.
Pro Tip: Get some cash on the way! Southern Sun does not accept credit cards. But trust me… Worth it!
The Boulder Med is a perfect place for families enjoying a day on the Pearl Street Mall to take a quick break for great food and a vibrant atmosphere. Located on Walnut Street just South of Pearl, the Med offers a ton of great food including kid favorites like pizza. If you’re lucky enough to stop in during happy hour (3 pm – 6:30 pm) the family can take advantage of special pricing on their extensive tapas menu as well as low prices on beer and wine for mom and dad. Kids can sample Mediterranean classics in a lively, fun atmosphere. Adults will enjoy the delicious food and fast, friendly service!
For families seeking a great breakfast and lunch restaurant, The Buff is a great option. The Buff is family owned and renowned not only for its legendary breakfast, but for its zero-waste initiative. The Buff’s cozy atmosphere as well as delicious, home-style breakfasts and lunch make this restaurant kid and family friendly! Adults will love the 99 cent breakfast drinks – mimosas, bloody marys and tequila sunrises right out of the tap.
Looking for outstanding Mexican food at an affordable price? Try Verde, this new-ish restaurant is just waiting to be discovered by Boulder families! Originally started as a food truck, Verde’s delicious mexican food can now be enjoyed at a brick and mortar restaurant. Eat in for a relaxed vibe with plenty of options for picky kids like nachos and burritos. My favorite is the oh-so-decadent grilled vegetables nachos piled high with cheese, tomatoes, onions, grilled peppers with a side of sour cream and fresh guacamole! Also a great place to stop by for carry-out to eat at home.
My pick for North Boulder is Murphy’s (which also has a South Boulder location) for it’s great menu selection and family-friendly feel. If you stop in for Thursday night dinner, prepare to have your minds blown by local magician, the Amazing Lamont! (Lamont also entertains the South Boulder location every Tuesday night.) Your kids will enjoy an amazing selection from burgers and hot dogs to pasta and pizza, along with their choice of side and a drink. For the grown-ups, Murphy’s has brewpub staples like burgers and IPA battered fish & chips as well as comfort plates, salads and so much more! A full bar is available, featuring local craft brews and creative cocktails.
